Can a power station run a mini fridge?

Updated
Short answer

Yes. A mini fridge averages about 30 W, so a 288 Wh power station runs it for about 8 hours and a 1,000 Wh unit for about 28 to 30 hours.

A compact fridge uses far less than its label suggests. The watts on the spec sheet are what the compressor can draw while it runs, and it is off about two-thirds of the time. Spread over a day, a typical 3 cu ft model averages about 30 W, and an ENERGY STAR Frigidaire EFR372 about 25 W. To check yours, divide the kWh per year on its EnergyGuide label by 8.76.

Each start brings a short spike of about 300 to 800 W. We use 500 W as the typical figure, which every station in our table can handle. The Jackery Explorer 300 v2, with 600 W of surge, is the one to watch: it covers a typical mini fridge but could trip on a model at the top of that range.

For a full day, 30 W adds up to about 720 Wh, or roughly 850 Wh of battery after inverter losses. A 500 Wh unit lasts about 14 hours, a 1,000 Wh unit about 28 to 30 hours, and a 2,000 Wh unit about 58 hours. A mini fridge is a good match for a small station, but backing it up will not save the food in your main fridge. If that is the goal, look at our full-size fridge page, where you need more surge and a bigger battery.

How long does each power station run a mini fridge?

At about 30 W on average, a mini fridge runs for about 8 hrs on the 286 Wh EcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus, about 28 hrs to 30 hrs on a 1,000 Wh-class unit (998–1,070 Wh) and about 5 days on the 4,096 Wh EcoFlow DELTA Pro 3.

Where these numbers come from

Danby's 3.2 cu ft compact fridge is rated 150 W and 259 kWh a year, which is only about 30 W averaged over the day. The compressor runs about a third of the time and needs a brief start-up spike of around 500 W.

Make it last longer

  • • Keep the door shut and the fridge full. Cold food and drinks hold the temperature better than empty air.
  • • Move it away from heat sources, and leave a gap around the back so the coils can shed heat.
  • • Use a middle thermostat setting, not the coldest. Colder settings make the compressor run longer.
  • • Pre-chill it on grid power before a forecast outage, so it starts on battery fully cold.

Common questions

How long will a power station run a mini fridge?
About 8 hours on a 288 Wh unit, 14 hours on a 500 Wh unit, 28 to 30 hours on a 1,000 Wh unit, and about 58 hours on a 2,000 Wh unit. That assumes about 100 W while running, about 30% of the time.
Can a 300 W power station run a mini fridge?
Usually, yes. The Jackery Explorer 300 v2 has 300 W of output and 600 W of surge, enough for a typical mini fridge's 500 W start-up. A model with a bigger spike, up to about 800 W, could trip it.
How much power does a mini fridge use per day?
About 700 Wh at our planning numbers. Efficient models use less: the Danby 3.2 cu ft averages about 30 W and the Frigidaire EFR372 about 25 W, or roughly 600 to 700 Wh a day.
