Can a power station run LED string lights?

Updated
Short answer

Yes. One 100-count strand of LED Christmas lights draws about 10 W, so a 1,024 Wh power station runs it for about 87 hours and a 300 Wh unit for about 24 hours.

LED Christmas lights are one of the lightest loads you can plug in. A 100-count LED strand is usually rated about 5 to 10 W, and we plan on 10 W to leave some margin. Bigger sets with larger bulbs can reach about 25 W. The lights stay on at full draw the whole time, with no start-up surge and no cycling. The watts are printed on the tag near the plug or on the box.

Since there is no surge, every station in our table can run them, so the question is how many strands and for how long. Add up the strands: 10 strands draw about 100 W, and a 5-hour evening uses about 500 Wh. A 1,024 Wh unit runs that display for about 8.5 hours, one full evening with most of a second left over. A 2,000 Wh unit gives about 17 hours, or 3 full evenings. A 300 Wh unit still runs 4 strands for about 6 hours, one full evening.

Old incandescent mini lights are a different story. They draw several times what an LED set does, so a station drains much faster. Check the tag, and swap old sets for LED ones if you plan to run them on battery. For a display you leave up every night all season, a station is best for spots with no outdoor outlet, since you will be recharging it every day or two.

How long does each power station run LED string lights?

At about 10 W on average, LED string lights runs for about 24 hrs on the 286 Wh EcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus, about 4 days on a 1,000 Wh-class unit (998–1,070 Wh) and about 15 days on the 4,096 Wh EcoFlow DELTA Pro 3.

Where these numbers come from

A 100-count LED light string is rated about 5 to 10 W, so a couple of strands for an evening use well under 100 Wh. Older incandescent mini-light strings use several times more, so check the tag.

Make it last longer

  • • Plug the lights into a timer so they run for 5 hours each evening, not all night. Ten strands left on for 12 hours use about 1,200 Wh, more than a 1,024 Wh unit holds.
  • • Keep the station dry and off wet ground. Set it under a porch roof or inside the garage door, and run an outdoor-rated extension cord out to the lights.
  • • Add up the watts on each strand's tag before you plan the display, and only connect strands end to end up to the limit printed on the tag.
  • • Use the station's USB ports for USB-powered string lights. They skip the inverter and the power it wastes.
  • • Recharge the station during the day from the wall or a solar panel, so it starts each evening full.

Common questions

How long will a power station run Christmas lights?
One 100-count LED strand at 10 W runs about 24 hours on a 300 Wh unit, about 42 hours on a 500 Wh unit, about 4 days on a 1,000 Wh unit and about 7 days on a 2,000 Wh unit.
How many strands of LED lights can a 1,000 Wh power station run?
Output is not the limit, since 10 strands draw only about 100 W. Time is. On a 1,024 Wh unit, 10 strands last about 8.5 hours and 4 strands about 22 hours.
Can a 300 Wh power station run Christmas lights for a whole evening?
Yes, for a small display. Four LED strands draw about 40 W, so a 286 to 288 Wh unit like the EcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus runs them for about 6 hours.
Do incandescent Christmas lights work on a power station?
Yes, but they draw several times more than LED sets, so the battery lasts a fraction as long. To estimate, multiply the station's watt-hours by 0.85 and divide by the total watts on the tags.
Can I leave a power station outside to run my lights?
Keep it out of rain and snow and off wet ground, with space around the vents. We have no weather rating data for these units, so check the manual before you leave one outdoors.
