Can a power station run a chest freezer (7 cu ft)?

Updated
Short answer

Yes. A 7 cu ft chest freezer averages about 26 W, so a 1,000 Wh power station runs it for about 32 to 34 hours, as long as the station has at least 700 W of surge and ideally 1,200 W or more.

Chest freezers are some of the easiest appliances to back up. Thick walls and a lid on top hold the cold in, so the compressor runs only about a third of the time. It draws about 50 to 150 W while running, and a 7 cu ft ENERGY STAR model averages about 26 W over a day.

Start-up is where small stations struggle. The compressor needs about 500 to 1,100 W for a moment when it kicks on. We use 700 W as the typical figure, which rules out the Jackery Explorer 300 v2 and its 600 W surge limit. The Goal Zero Yeti 500, at 1,000 W of surge, should start most freezers but could trip on one at the top of that range. A unit with 1,200 W of surge or more removes the doubt.

For sizing, a full day at 26 W uses about 634 Wh. After inverter losses, that is roughly 750 Wh of battery. A 288 Wh unit lasts about 9 hours, a 1,000 Wh unit about 32 to 34 hours, and a 2,000 Wh unit about 66 hours. Because a closed freezer holds its cold, you can also run it in bursts and save the battery for other things. For a week-long outage you will still need a way to recharge.

How long does each power station run a chest freezer (7 cu ft)?

At about 26 W on average, a chest freezer (7 cu ft) runs for about 9 hrs on the 286 Wh EcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus, about 32 hrs to 34 hrs on a 1,000 Wh-class unit (998–1,070 Wh) and about 5 days on the 4,096 Wh EcoFlow DELTA Pro 3. One unit here can’t run it.

Where these numbers come from

A 7 cu ft ENERGY STAR Midea chest freezer is rated 225 kWh a year, about 26 W averaged over the day, because the compressor runs only about a third of the time. A full, closed chest freezer stays frozen for a day or more without power, so you can run it in bursts to save battery.

Make it last longer

  • • Keep the lid closed. A chest freezer holds cold well, and every opening costs battery.
  • • Fill empty space with jugs of water before storm season. A full freezer holds its temperature longer than a half-empty one.
  • • Run it in bursts. A few hours on the station, then a few hours off with the lid shut, can stretch one charge much further.
  • • Turn the freezer to its coldest setting the day before a forecast outage, then set it back once power returns.
  • • Watch combined surge. If the fridge and freezer start at the same moment, a smaller unit can trip.

Common questions

How long will a power station run a chest freezer?
For a 7 cu ft model, about 9 hours on a 288 Wh unit, 16 hours on a 500 Wh unit, 32 to 34 hours on a 1,000 Wh unit, and about 66 hours on a 2,000 Wh unit. Larger or older freezers use more.
Can a small power station start a chest freezer?
Some can. The EcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus (1,200 W surge) and BLUETTI Elite 30 V2 (1,500 W surge) can start a typical 7 cu ft freezer. The Jackery Explorer 300 v2, with 600 W of surge, cannot.
How long does a chest freezer stay frozen without power?
A full, closed chest freezer can stay frozen for a day or more. That lets you run it a few hours at a time from a power station instead of nonstop. Keep a thermometer inside so you know where you stand.
Can I run a chest freezer and a fridge together?
Yes, on a station with enough surge for one compressor to start while the other runs. Together they average about 71 W, so a 1,000 Wh unit lasts about 12 hours and a 2,000 Wh unit about 24 hours.
