Can a power station run a window AC 5,000 BTU?

Updated
Short answer

Yes, for a few hours. A 5,000 BTU window AC runs at about 450 W and needs about 1,350 W to start, so a 1,000 Wh power station keeps it going for about 4 hours as the compressor cycles.

A small window AC is one of the few cooling loads a power station can handle. Frigidaire rates its 5,000 BTU model at about 450 W while cooling. Once the room is cool, the compressor cycles off, so it averages about half the running watts over an hour.

Start-up is the catch. The compressor needs roughly three times its running watts, about 1,350 W, for a second or two. That rules out the EcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus (1,200 W surge), the Goal Zero Yeti 500 (1,000 W) and the Jackery Explorer 300 v2 (600 W). The BLUETTI Elite 30 V2 can start it, but its 288 Wh battery lasts only about an hour.

For an 8-hour night at about 225 W average, you use about 1,800 Wh. After inverter losses, that is roughly 2,100 Wh of battery. A 1,000 Wh unit lasts about 4 hours, a 2,000 Wh unit about 7.5, and a 3,000 Wh unit about 11. Central air is the wrong job for a portable power station: it is hard-wired, usually runs on 240V, and draws far more. Bigger window units also use more than this 5,000 BTU model.

How long does each power station run a window AC 5,000 BTU?

At about 225 W on average, a window AC 5,000 BTU runs for about 1 hr on the 288 Wh BLUETTI Elite 30 V2, about 4 hrs on a 1,000 Wh-class unit (998–1,070 Wh) and about 15 hrs on the 4,096 Wh EcoFlow DELTA Pro 3. 3 units here can’t run it.

Where these numbers come from

Frigidaire's 5,000 BTU FFRA051WAE is rated 450 W and 4.6 amps while cooling. The compressor needs roughly three times that for a second or two when it starts, and it cycles off once the room is cool, so it averages about half its running watts.

Make it last longer

  • • Cool one small room and close the door. A 5,000 BTU unit is meant for a single room, not a whole floor.
  • • Pre-cool the room while the grid is up, then switch to the station. The compressor cycles off sooner in a room that is already cool.
  • • Set the thermostat a few degrees higher than usual. The compressor runs less when the target is easier to reach.
  • • Close the blinds on sunny windows. When it is cool enough outside, switch to a box fan, which draws about 85 W.
  • • Run nothing else when the compressor starts, especially on a 1,000 Wh unit.

Common questions

Can a power station run a window air conditioner?
A small one, yes. A 5,000 BTU unit needs about 450 W to run and about 1,350 W to start. Any station in our table with at least 1,350 W of surge and enough output can run it, but battery size limits you to a few hours.
How long will a 1,000 Wh power station run a window AC?
About 4 hours for a 5,000 BTU unit, assuming the compressor runs about half the time. If it runs nonstop on a hot day, closer to 2 hours.
What size power station do I need to run a window AC overnight?
About 2,100 Wh of battery for 8 hours with the compressor cycling. A 2,000 Wh unit comes close, and a 3,000 Wh unit gives you about 11 hours.
Can a power station run central air conditioning?
Not a portable one. Central AC is hard-wired, usually runs on 240V and draws far more than a window unit. It needs a whole-home backup system sized for your unit and installed by an electrician.
