Can a power station run a space heater (1500W)?

Updated
Short answer

Only briefly. A 1,500 W space heater empties a 1,000 Wh power station in about 35 minutes on high, or a little over an hour if the thermostat cycles it, and units under 1,500 W of output cannot run it at all.

A space heater is about the hardest thing you can ask a power station to run. It turns electricity straight into heat, so it draws its full rating whenever the element is on: about 1,500 W on high and about 900 W on low. There is no motor surge, but the station needs at least 1,500 W of continuous output. That rules out the four smallest units in our table, all under 500 Wh.

Battery size is the real limit. On high, a 1,000 Wh unit lasts about 35 minutes. With the thermostat cycling the heater about half the time, it lasts a little over an hour. A typical 6 hours of use averages about 750 W, which adds up to 4,500 Wh. After inverter losses, that is roughly 5,300 Wh of battery, more than any single station in our table holds without expansion batteries. Even the 4,096 Wh EcoFlow DELTA Pro 3 lasts only about 4.5 hours at that pace.

So for most people, a power station is the wrong tool for heating a room through an outage. It works for short bursts, like taking the chill off a small room before bed. To stay warm overnight, an electric blanket uses about a tenth of the power. Never use a gas grill, camp stove or fuel-burning heater indoors to make up the difference.

How long does each power station run a space heater (1500W)?

At about 750 W on average, a space heater (1500W) runs for about 1 hr on a 1,000 Wh-class unit (998–1,070 Wh) and about 4.5 hrs on the 4,096 Wh EcoFlow DELTA Pro 3. 4 units here can’t run it.

Where these numbers come from

A Lasko ceramic heater draws 1,500 W on high and 900 W on low, and the thermostat cycles it, so it averages about half that over an hour. At full blast it empties a 1,000 Wh station in under an hour, so most portable stations cannot heat a room all night.

Make it last longer

  • • Use an electric blanket instead. A 150 W queen blanket cycling half the time averages about 75 W, so a 1,000 Wh unit keeps you warm for about 11 to 12 hours.
  • • If you must run the heater, use the low setting. At 900 W, cycling half the time, a 1,000 Wh unit lasts about 2 hours instead of about 1.
  • • Heat one small room and close the door. Hang a blanket over the doorway if there is no door.
  • • Plug the heater straight into the station. Do not use a power strip or a thin extension cord with a 1,500 W heater, and keep it clear of bedding and curtains.
  • • Do not count on boost modes. EcoFlow X-Boost and BLUETTI Power Lifting let some smaller units run heating devices, but they add no battery, so a small station still empties fast.

Common questions

How long will a power station run a 1,500 W space heater?
On high, about 35 minutes on a 1,000 Wh unit, about 70 minutes on a 2,000 Wh unit, and about 2.3 hours on a 4,000 Wh unit. If the thermostat cycles it half the time, double those times.
Can a small power station run a space heater?
No. Stations with 300 to 600 W of output, like the EcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus or Jackery Explorer 300 v2, cannot run a 1,500 W heater. Boost modes on some small units allow heating devices, but a 288 Wh battery would not last long.
What size power station do I need to run a space heater all night?
For 8 hours with the thermostat cycling half the time, you would use about 6,000 Wh, which needs roughly 7,000 Wh of battery. That means an expandable home-backup system, not a single portable unit. An electric blanket is the practical alternative.
Is an electric blanket better than a space heater on battery?
Yes, by a wide margin. A queen electric blanket averages about 75 W, about a tenth of a space heater's 750 W average. The same 1,000 Wh station runs the blanket for about 11 to 12 hours but the heater for only about an hour.
